An İzmir Wedding

Be a guest in Selin and Mert’s story at an İzmir wedding.

A garden among olive trees on the Aegean coast. Selin and Mert are getting married tonight, and you are invited.

A basket will greet you at the door. Inside, a scarf for every guest: a sea from the couple’s first holiday, a white house, red flowers. Take one; wear it at your neck, on your wrist or in your hair, as you like.

But this story began the night before, at the henna night in Selin’s grandmother’s garden. Let’s start there.

Frames

The night before

1/11The henna night. Lanterns, the henna tray and the same window pattern on the girls’ wrists and in their hair.
2/11The henna pattern comes from Selin’s grandmother’s house: wooden shutters, a lace curtain and the bride’s name in the corner.

The wedding day

3/11Selin and her sister Yağmur just before the ceremony. The guests’ scarves hang from the olive branches.
4/11The basket at the entrance. Each scarf is tied with a ribbon and carries a small card.
5/11The wedding pattern: Selin and Mert’s first holiday. The sea, a white house, red flowers and two names in the corner.

The ceremony

6/11The ceremony in the garden overlooking the sea. Most guests already have their scarves on, some at the neck, some on the wrist.

At the table

7/11Yağmur with her friends Aslı and Esin. “We all wore the same pattern, yet none of us looked alike,” says Yağmur.

On the dance floor

8/11When the music changes, the scarves go up in the air. The busiest moment of the night.
9/11Someone has gone to dance; her bag and scarf wait on the chair.

End of the night

10/11A candle and a scarf on the table. The card reads: “Made for moments together.”

The next day

11/11The next morning, those setting off still carry the same pattern in their hair, on their wrists, on their bags.
