Selin’s henna night: burgundy velvet, candlelight and a window pattern

Her grandmother’s window became a scarf. Selin tells us about her henna night.

A week before her wedding, Selin held her henna night in her grandmother’s garden. She asked us for one thing: “Put the window of that house in the pattern.”

Wooden shutters, a lace curtain, a rose on the sill. The pattern was framed with burgundy ribbons and Selin’s name was written in the corner. All night, the girls wore the scarf on their wrists and in their hair.

Frames

1/4The velvet bindallı was my mother’s. We tied the scarf on my wrist so it would show while the henna was applied.

Why a window?

2/4Every summer of my childhood was spent in front of that window. My grandmother still looks out of it every evening.
3/4The girls. Some wore it at the neck, some in their hair; we laughed when we looked at each other, because we were all at the same window.
4/4Hand, wrist and scarf after the henna. My favourite frame.
